Evgeniya, who was handing out newspapers near a train station in St. Petersburg, approached me as I walked with a camera crew around the city. She said she was a life-long St. Petersburg resident, somewhere in her 70s. I asked her what some memorable moments were. She asked ‘what decade?’ I replied the 1990s, expecting her to say how terrible things were. She described it however as a period of hope and energy. She recalled people trying to start up their businesses…and she said she herself tried to get into politics…perhaps that is why she remembers it fondly.
