Slava walked up to me on the street, recognizing that I was a foreigner and a bit lost, and said ‘can I help you’ in English. He later invited me for coffee to talk. He said he now invests in real estate in Voronezh. As we discussed business, I asked him how he survived the 1990s. He said he simply arbitraged goods – buying something in the morning in one part of town and selling it somewhere else at a higher price.
