Vladimir: Moscow Stylist
MOSCOW: Vladimir, 24, was walking toward the Moscow metro on an overcast summer day. He said he studied jazz at a musical institute, but decided to pursue a fashion career instead. He enrolled in a well-known Russian fashion school Gosh to become a stylist. After working as an assistant, he formed his own team (photographer, make-up artist, ect) and has worked for clients like Vogue Italy and Elle. As for fashion, he doesn't think that Moscow is behind Milan. He is optimistic on the future of Russian designers, pointing out that a few have already made it big. "We have a lot of creative people. In five years, we will know our young designers. They will prove themselves in the fashion world."
Vasily: Grammar School History Teacher
St. Petersburg: Vasily, 24, was dressed in a bow tie and sporting a curly mustache as he walked through the center of St Petersburg on his way to meet friends. A native of Bryansk, a town 400km southwest of Moscow, Vasily teaches history in a St. Petersburg grammar school. Vasily said 20th century history is his favorite as it gave rise to jazz, blues, Hemingway and Bulgakov. He plans to pursue a doctorate in history.
Alyona: Kursk Waitress at Cafe
I popped into a cafe around 10am in the center of Kursk for a meeting. It was empty except for one other customer. I ordered a standard-sized Americano, but when Alyona returned, she brought me a large Americano. Maybe they simply made a mistake, but she seemed to imply they did it on purpose. Perhaps because I was a foreigner? Many Russians will take an extra step (or add a bit more coffee) to make a good impression on foreigners and I haven't sensed that this trait has changed among the average Russian person since sanctions were imposed. I later asked Alyona about herself. She said she enjoys drawing/painting and may want to teach that skill someday. I asked if there were other artists in the family and she responded that her dad plays Jazz.
