Dima: Central Asian Immigrant on Sakhalin

He was helping load the back of a truck with vegetables from a store. He said his name was Dima, perhaps a Russified version of his real name, and that he was 24 years-old. He said he came from Kyrgyzstan and would probably be on Sakhalin another year. His two colleagues were also migrants. Dima was one of many Kyrgyz that I met during my short stay on Sakhalin. Most seem to be active in the construction industry as Sakhalin revamps many of the Soviet-era grey housing.

Kima: Ex-Barber to US Soldiers

She was smoking a cigarette with a middle-aged red-haired woman outside the Mall of Dubai. They were speaking Russian and I figured that she was probably from Central Asia and her friend from Russia. The next day, as I passed the mall again, she popped out for another cigarette break and I walked over to find out where she was from. She said she grew up in Kyrgyzstan and worked in Afghanistan before coming to Dubai. ”Afghanistan??,” I asked in disbelief.

Krygyz Relatives Enjoying Break

Moscow Portrait: These two young women were sitting in the shade near a "beach" in Moscow. They said there were cousins and had moved to Moscow 3 years ago from Kyrgyzstan to find work. They are two of probably 100,000+ people from that Central Asian country seeking a better salary here in Russia.
