Alexander: Roof Cleaner from Volga

SAMARA: It was a pretty amazing site....the sun was covering the Frozen Volga with a bright light on a late morning... when in the distance, a darkish figure was moving quickly across the white mass. It was someone riding a bike across the frozen river. I ran back toward the stairs leading to the Volga to catch Alexander getting off his bike. He said he lives on the other side of the Volga and crosses 5 times a week to clean snow off roofs. Alexander said he was on his way to work. I asked if it were difficult to bike across the ice. He answered that it was easy as he has been doing it for so long.

A Moscow Father

The soft, fluffy, snow was falling non-stop in Moscow on February 3, quickly covering my courtyard. I couldn’t pass this up, so I grabbed my camera and headed for the exit to take some photos. I wanted to capture people walking through the snowstorm – a typical Russia image. I ended up finding something that was not a ‘typical’ Russia image…though it is becoming one in my view.

Igor: Snow Bike Rider

Igor, nearly 30, was crossing Red Square on his bike amid a heavy snow storm right before New Year's. A former gym trainer with more than five years experience, he said he had biked about 7 km to Red Square and planned to bike the rest of the day. He said he planned to spend the New Year's night biking around Moscow with his new girlfriend ... just like he did on Dec. 31, 2013.
