Russia-NYC Series 35

To anyone in NYC, these hats stand for the Yankees. In Russia, where baseball is basically non-existent, its simply stands for New York City. Valentin and Sofia, first-year law students, were walking together in snowy Moscow when I passed them. Valentin said he and Sofia recently met in university. Valentin said he wants to continue studying after getting a law degree and go into politics because there a lot of things he would like to change. One issue close to his heart is secondary education, which he feels forces high school students to learn useless material.

Russia-NYC Photo Series 26

Karina, a political science major, was walking toward a Moscow park with friends when I saw her in her Brooklyn jacket. This looks very much like a real Brooklyn highschool football, something that Travolta and the gang would have worn in the TV serial "Welcome Back Kotter."

Russia-NYC Photo Series 25

Moscow's population has grown rapidly over the past 50 years, meaning many of its inhabitants have shallow roots. Alexei, wearing a NYC t-shirt, said his family's Moscow roots go back to the time of Ivan the Great in the 16th century.

Milena: Teenage Dog Lover

Moscow Portrait: I noticed Milena in the crowded metro earlier in the year due to her very colorful, original style. We met recently to take some photos. Hard of hearing, she has no relatives aside from her father. Thus, her Shar Pei dog is a very important part of her life. In addition to fashion and shopping, she loves taking photos with her friends.

Green Man

A Moscow street fashion shot. He said he was from the Moscow suburbs, worked in marketing and hoped to help people.

Krygyz Relatives Enjoying Break

Moscow Portrait: These two young women were sitting in the shade near a "beach" in Moscow. They said there were cousins and had moved to Moscow 3 years ago from Kyrgyzstan to find work. They are two of probably 100,000+ people from that Central Asian country seeking a better salary here in Russia.

Anna: Moscow Fire Twirler

Moscow: Anna was on her way to work, listrning to her headphones, when I passed her. She said she likes to practice twirling chains with fire with friends in a park across the river from the Kremlin. She is wearing black socks up to her calf.
